How are transponder codes used and when must a transponder be used?

Transponder codes are used to identify the aircraft to ATC. A transponder must be used in all controlled airspace, within Class B, Class C, and in all airspace above 10,000 feet MSL, excluding the airspace at and below 2,500 feet AGL.
