What is the purpose of a Mode C transponder, and where is its use mandatory?

A Mode C transponder reports altitude to ATC for altitude separation. Its use is mandatory in all Class A, B, and C airspace, within 30 miles of Class B airports, and above the ceiling and within the lateral boundaries of Class C or Class B airspace up to 10,000 feet MSL.
