How does a PAPI system work?

A PAPI system uses a single row of four lights. If the pilot sees all white lights, they are too high; three white and one red mean slightly high; two white and two red indicate they are on the correct glide path; one white and three red mean slightly low; and all red lights indicate they are too low.
